Blog Remodel

While the house projects are on hold I decided to carry on with yesterdays goals to keep the blog up and running.  Mission accomplished!  I have remodeled the blog layout for a fresher more professional look.  Doing away with fluff and stuff you'll never miss.

Pleasant photos from here at Retro Retreat are now in the left side bar for you to enjoy while perusing the posts.  I changed the color scheme to brighten things up. 

If you like it let me know, if it still could use some work, let me know.  I'm open.

More Scarf Colors

Some of you were asking for more photos for detail on these up-cycled scarves.

Shown in these two photos are size and color variations - so far.  I am getting ready to make a few more so that there will be about four in each color (both solid and patterned).

They measure anywhere from 22 to 32 inches in length (doubled), are circular, and seamless.   They can be worn a variety of ways, which I will be posting soon as well.

As mentioned in previous posts, they are made from large white t-shirts purchased from thrift stores and hand dyed.

This first line will be available at The Wandering Wardrobe in Port Townsend after October 18th, and will retail for $10 each.

Scarf it Up!

My next project was to create a spin off of my favorite infinity scarf, I'm sure you've seen them, a long hoop of fabulous fabric you can wrap around your neck once, twice, or even three times.

My new scarf would be made using a recycled t-shirt from the local thrift store.  I started with an extra large, white, 100% cotton t-shirt.  The best use of the fabric was to cut it in to two pieces about 10 inches wide, by about 24 inches long.  Not as long as I had hoped, but it works out in the end.

I sewed the two ends together, forming a loop.  Washed and dried it to see if the sides would hold up without seams, and yes!  It worked.


Next I dyed it.  My favorite colors are earth tones, so I used the Khaki color Dharma Fiber Reactive dye.

Here is the finished product.  If you can zoom in on the scarf, note how the dye has a marbled effect.  I do this by pouring the dye over the item inside the zip-lock bag and soaking it in its crunched up form.


This scarf is not as long I had hoped, but it can still be folded twice, as in the photo below.  I like how the soft cotton folds nicely and isn't bulky.
