Summer Around the Yard

I haven't taken may photos of the yard this year, my apologies!  These indoor projects have preoccupied me.

Just yesterday the colorful orange day lilies started to pop out and for the first time ever, the Crocosmia have bloomed!  I guess you have to quit moving things around before they settle in and bloom.

The Shasta Daisies are out and the lavender is divine.

So here are some photos I got today with the 200mm.

If you're receiving this in your email, and would like to visit the blog or comment, this link should get you there. https://huckleberry-hollow.blogspot.com/2019/07/summer-around-yard.html

Pond Project

I started this Pond Project at the end of Spring, but things take time and other things needed to be done.  This was mostly for fun!
I relocated the small pond form that was a little further back in the foliage, with just enough open for me to see the birds.  It's really my forest version of a bird bath.  I get more warblers and ground scavenging birds this way.

I used to have a large, tall bird feeder in the clearing in the back, but have decided to let the ecosystem re-balance itself for a while and took it down.  There are plenty of berries and bugs for the birds to eat.  I'm still providing water and habitat to qualify for my Backyard Wildlife Habitat status.

I started with this rough layout.

Then moved the pond in place and added the plants.  I wanted some color back there so I added some colorful blooming plants for the hummingbirds and bees.

I'm still tweaking the rockery, I want to hide the pond rim completely in the end.  Next year the plants will fill in and I can divide and add more.

Another extremely affordable project, all I purchased was the plants and some dirt.  I had compost dirt and rocks are available everywhere here.

More photos when things change a bit.

October 2017

My big brother moved into his new place this year and decided he didn't need this fantastic little shed cabinet, so I scored it for my place!  Fits perfectly here.

Finally a place to store my tools close to the yard!

This was the biggest bean I have ever seen.  Right off the Scarlet Runner.  How funny is this?  I think it's what happens when they grow without supervision.

A cute rabbit came to visit here this month, was here for about four days and may have moved on today as I saw it hopping down the driveway.  It was so tame!  Didn't even run away while I was working out in the yard.  I hope it returns.

Surprisingly, there are still flowers blooming in October here.  This is my miniature rose that usually is eaten by the deer, but they haven't been around much this year.

And this funny little flower that is about the size of a bumble bee.  Just lovely.

So that wraps up October, thanks for following!

May Flowers

It is true that April showers bring May flowers, but I think in our case this year it was many months of showers!  Finally the sun has come out for more than a few hours and things are drying out and blooming.  Life!

Summer 2015

It's been a long - dry - hot summer here in the Pacific Northwest.  I think I am not alone when I say how wearing and downright depressing it has been.  We're just not used to this!
It has lead me to rethink my gardening plans for next year.

In an effort to conserve on future water I am working on consolidating my plants to a smaller area, in the front yard.  I'm calling it the Cottage Garden.
When I'm not working or hiding out from the heat I am moving the plants that don't have to wait to be dormant, others will have to wait.  I'm also fencing it back in to keep the now ravenous deer out.  The bears however, have already broken in once, but it was repairable.

My front gate, recycled from another area.  Driftwood courtesy of Mother Natures beach.  :)  More images as things progress.

Other happenings around the Hollow have been documented as follows.
